Baranagar Math is the genesis of the Ramakrishna movement and also of Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission. After the Mahasamadhi of Bhagawan Sri Ramakrishna at Cossipore Garden-House on 16th August 1886, the young disciples of the Master, under the  leadership of Narendranath (later Swami Vivekananda), practised severe spiritual austerities and assimilated the ideas and ideals of Sri Ramakrishna in a dilapidated house at Baranagar for more than five years, which is known as Baranagar Math - the first monastery of the Ramakrishna Order. The Relics of Sri Ramakrishna (Atmaramer Kouto) was worshipped here by Swami Ramakrishnananda. Swami Vivekananda with his brother-disciples took the vows of sannyasa here performing ‘Viraja Homa (Havan)’. Some senior monks of the Ramakrishna Order stated that there had been no example of such practising of spiritual austerities in such a congregation at one place in the spiritual history of the world.

In the history of Indian renaissance the name of Swami Vivekananda soars high. His birthplace in Kolkata has already  been accepted as a place of historical importance and has been preserved with due importance and sanctity. Dakshineswar Temple Complex, Cossipore Garden-House, Kannyakumari, the places of his activities in Europe and America,  Belur Math and some other places have already been accepted as places of historical importance which are preserved with due importance and sanctity.

The  hoary  Spiritual  Heritage of ‘Ramakrishna  Math,  Baranagar’ (125/1,  Pramanick  Ghat  Road, Kolkata  -  700036,  India - a branch  centre  of  its  Hqrs. : Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math) and the importance of its golden history is least  known yet. With the march of time the area of the old Monastery (1886 – 1892) had undergone change of hands and presently a small portion of it has come to the possession of the Hqrs. To restore the whole area of those  days’  Math  and re-build the first Monastery – the Baranagar Math  precinct with its proper ambiance is the foremost task before us.
