About us

''After the passing away of the Master we underwent a lot of spiritual practices at the Baranagar Math. The Austerities of that period were enough to dismay super-natural beings not to speak of man''
--Swami Vivekananda

Baranagar Math was the genesis of Ramakrishna movement and also of Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission. After the Mahasamadhi of Bhagawan Sri Ramakrishna at Cossipore Garden House on 16th August 1886, the young disciples of the Master, under the leadership

of Narendranath (Swami Vivekananda), practised severe spiritual austerities and assimilated the ideas and ideals of Sri Ramakrishna in a dilapidated house at Baranagar for more than five years, which is known as Baranagar Math the first monastery of the Ramakrishna Order. Here the Relics of Sri Ramakrishna (Atmaramer Kouto) was worshipped by Swami Ramakrishnananda and Swami Vivekananda with his brother disciples took the vows of sannyasa performing ‘Virajahoma’.The senior monks of the Ramakrishna Order had stated that there was no example of such practising of spiritual austerities in such a congregation at one place in the spiritual history of the world.
In the history of Indian renaissance the name of Swami Vivekananda soars high. His birth place in Kolkata already been accepted as places of historical importance and have been preserved with due importance and sanctity. Dakshineswar Temple Complex, Cossipore Garden House, Kannyakumari, the places of his activities in Europe and America,  Belur Math have already been accepted as places of historical importance and have been preserved with due importance and sanctity.
‘Ramakrishna Math, Baranagar’,(125/1, Pramanick Ghat Road, Kolkata - 700 036, India) now a branch centre of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math also conducting some philanthropic activities, is least known till date. To preserve and re-build the Baranagar Math precinct and continue with the philanthropic activities a master plan has been taken up at this Math Centre.
